Women's History Month

March is Women' s History Month; a thirty-one day celebration of the historical contributions of women.  Recognizing women's place in history began with President Jimmy Carter and his 1980 proclamation of establishing Women's History Week. It took seven more years before the celebration was extended to a month.
The theme for Women's History Month 2014 is:
"Celebrating Women of Character, Courage, and Commitment"

Women's History- Did You Know.....

  • that windshield wipers were invented by Mary Anderson 1903?
  • that Susan B. Anthony was the first real woman to be featured on United States coinage?
  • that the medical syringe was invented by Letitia Geer in 1899?
  • that Marie Curie was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize? She won for Physics in 1903.
  • that Antoinette Blackwell was the first American woman to be ordained as a minister in a recognized denomination in 1853?
  • that Barbara Jordan was the first woman to be elected to the Texas senate?
  • that Vashti Mckenzie was the first female elected bishop in the A.M.E. church?
  • that Madame C.J. Walker was the first self-made female American millionaire?

Thank you Lord for all the cherished women in our lives and in our histories: mothers, sisters, friends and neighbors. God, may women across the globe continue to be empowered, knowing the love you offer. AMEN.
