Take Care Tuesday

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a  chance to raise awareness about the importance of screening and the early detection of breast cancer.

About 1 in 8 women born today in the United States will get breast cancer at some point in her lifetime. After skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common kind of cancer in women.

The good news? Many women can survive breast cancer if it's found and treated early.  A mammogram--the screening test for breast cancer- can help find breast cancer early.

Make a difference! Spread the word about mammograms and encourage your loved ones, church members and friends to get involved!

Here are a few ideas:
  • Ask doctors and nurses to speak to women about the importance of getting screened for breast cancer.
  • Encourage women age 40 and older to talk with their doctor about when to start getting mammograms.
  • Talk with women ages 50 to 74 in your community/churches about getting mammograms every 2 years.

Mortgage Burning

This past weekend was a marvelous time in the life of African Methodism. Rev. Andre P. Jefferson, senior pastor of Bethel AME Church- Hampton, VA celebrated  a milestone with a mortgage burning, land dedication and banquet.  Bishop DeVeaux was  the guest preacher for the mortgage burning and presided over the land dedication. The Bethel family was able to remarkably retire a $1.1 million mortgage in 39 months!  Bethel AME Church is now in phase 2 to build a new church on the recently purchased 16 acres which allows for future development.
