Affordable Health Care Rally

The Reverends Willie Wilson (Union Temple Baptist Church-Washington, DC) and Frank Tucker (First Baptist Church-Washington, DC) co-organized an affordable health care rally on the steps of the John Wilson City Council Building. This effort was to encourage the members of the city council to pass legislation of an affordable health care bill that they will vote on June 4, 2013. With the higher cost of living for the average Washington, DC resident coupled with those on fixed incomes, current health care option are often unrealistic.

Thankfully, the church as a whole from several denominations and ethnic diversities came together to help push this initiative forward. Representing the AME Church Second Episcopal District were Bishop William P. DeVeaux, Sr., Reverends Henry White (Brown Memorial), Michael Bell, Sr. (Allen Chapel), Samuel Hayward (Hemingway Memorial). Representing the City Council were Councilwomen Mary Chen (Ward 2) and Yvette Alexander (Ward 7).

Bishop DeVeaux's remarks included, "I just received my insurance renewal in the mail, which unfortunately is equal to what I earned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army." The event organizers were encouraging to those in attendance to accompany them to each of the councilpersons offices to rally their vote on tomorrow's important legislation.
